Authorities are considering at least two charges against the widow of the Orlando shooter, ABC News reports. He murdered 49 people and injured 53 others in what President Obama and others have called an act of terrorism.

Mateen carried out the worst mass shooting in American history in the early hours of Sunday morning when he opened fire in Pulse nightclub in Orlando.

The FBI is thoroughly investigating Mateen’s past.

The messages were described in a letter from committee Chairman Ron Johnson to Mark Zuckerberg, asking the Facebook CEO to provide “all Facebook data on Mr. Mateen’s activities on his account and any affiliated Facebook accounts”. Johnson did not explain how the committee obtained the information about Mateen’s Facebook activity.

While authorities say they believe Mateen was radicalized, they are sifting through a host of factors in the investigation, including his pledges of loyalty to the Islamic State; prior claims he made about other, opposing militant groups; the possibility that anti-gay sentiment motivated his attack; and the added fact that witnesses say they had previously seen him on gay dating apps and at the club.

CIA Chief John Brennan said on Thursday that the US Central Intelligence Agency did not uncover any direct connection between Omar Mateen and foreign terrorist organizations.

“As we have seen in Orlando, San Bernardino and elsewhere, ISIL is attempting to inspire attacks by sympathizers who have no direct links to the group”, Brennan told the Senate Intelligence Committee. Mateen frequented her bar, LaSalla said, and he eventually badgered her with messages on Facebook. After that first burst of gunfire, Mateen held hostages in the building until police stormed the club at 5 a.m. and killed him in a shootout.

Mateen had been on the FBI’s radar twice before, Comey said earlier this week.

On Saturday night, hours before the rampage, Mateen visited Disney Springs, an outdoor restaurant, retail and entertainment complex at Walt Disney World, an official who was briefed on the case but insisted on anonymity to discuss the continuing investigation told The Associated Press.

LaSalla said that Mateen “didn’t exactly” proposition her in his messages, but did not reveal anything else about their contents.

Mateen’s wife has gone into seclusion.

The shooter admitted to using marijuana and steroids but never said how often or when, but he did check a box stating he doesn’t drink alcohol.
