Orlando theme parks give free bug spray to ease Zika worries
No mosquito-transmitted case of the Zika virus has been found in central Florida.
“I can’t walk out of my house unless I’m covered from head to toe”, said Paradiz. Tables have been set up at places like Disney Springs, and Walt Disney World, with Universal and SeaWorld following suit.
News 96.5 WDBO reached out to the theme parks Saturday who were not commenting then.
Theme park owners say they are providing the repellent out of an abundance of caution, even though they already practice extensive mosquito prevention and monitoring.
Starting Sunday, Sea World Parks & Entertainment will be offering guests “complimentary EPA-approved insect repellent” at all of its venues, from Busch Gardens in Tampa Bay to SeaWorld, said spokeswoman Aimée Jeansonne Becka.
Disney hotel guests will also find cans of repellent in their rooms along with a note about Disney’s mosquito prevention program.
According to Gizmodo, none of the educational signs placed throughout these parks make direct reference to the virus, which has been shown to cause severe birth defects when contracted by pregnant women, despite being the very impetus for the displays. “We continue to stay in contact with local, state and federal health officials for the latest updates and recommendations”. Universal Studios said it is already running destination-wide prevention and management program for mosquito and other environmental problems.
The theme park had not warned guests of the possible danger posed by gators, especially to small children, at the time of the attack.
The park will also start handing out free mosquito repellent that is not only safe to guests, but to their animals as well.
