Ortiz not in starting lineup for home finale against Yanks

The Boston Red Sox concluded a four game sweep of the New York Yankees this Sunday, beating them 5-4 after being down 4-0.

Curtis Granderson was the hero for the New York Mets, homering to tie and win the game in a 12-inning 3-2 victory over the Minnesota Twins.

Ramirez absolutely crushed both homers on Sunday night.

Hanley Ramirez and Jackie Bradley Jr. homered, Clay Buchholz tossed six innings of two-run ball and the Boston Red Sox beat the New York Yankees 7-4 at Fenway Park Friday. They got another home run last night from rookie Gary Sanchez, who now has sixteen on the season in just forty-one games, and the future will be built around him and numerous other top prospects the Yankees picked up when they sold off their big name stars at the trade deadline.

Ramirez, who began the series with a dramatic game-winning three-run homer, ended it with a three-run homer in the fifth and then the solo shot over everything in left in the seventh to send the Red Sox to Baltimore for a four-game showdown with the second-place Orioles. The Yankees reliever had a 0.47 ERA and had been particularly tough on right-handers, but it didn’t matter.

Working with a 4-0 lead, Sabathia blew a chance to escape unscathed in the fifth inning.

“I tried to hit [Butler] on the move and wound up short-arming it”, said Sabathia. The 24-year-old rising star threw a complete-game shutout with 16 strikeouts and no walks. “He battled. He fought”. Sabathia fell behind Ramirez 3-1, and then the Red Sox designated hitter altered the tenor of the game with one swing of the bat. There’s very little reason to think the status quo will change anytime soon unless Sabathia becomes A-Rod-level bad.

With so many big intra-division games left to go this season, the Sox can’t really be thinking about much beyond avoiding that play-in wild card round. Castro strained his right hamstring running out a double and Ellsbury bruised his right knee sliding into a bullpen wall trying to make a catch.

And he followed up that effort with the winning blast in the very next inning, smacking his second homer to right field to seal a walk-off win.

The NY Mets did some sweeping up of their own, taking three in a row from the Minnesota Twins with a 3-2 victory last night.

The Yankees added another run in the third on the 16th homer of the season from catcher Gary Sanchez before chasing Pomeranz in the fourth.
