Oscar 2016 Predictions: ‘Trumbo’ Leads SAG Nominations But ‘Spotlight’ Is
The Screen Actors Guild has announced the nominations for the 22nd annual Screen Actors Guild Awards, which will be presented January 30, 2016, in a ceremony to be simulcast live on TBS and TNT. It was McAdams, though, that scored a nomination for best supporting actress for the film.
Kiwi actor Dean O’Gorman figures in the Screen Actors Guild Awards with his portrayal of Kirk Douglas in the Hollywood blacklist drama Trumbo helping the movie score a best cast nomination.
Elba’s other nomination is for his starring role in “Luther“, recognized in the TV movie/miniseries category.
In addition to the Beasts ensemble and Elba, the diverse ensemble of Universal’s Straight Outta Compton also was nominated.
While lead actor nominees included Bryan Cranston, Johnny Depp, Leonardo DiCaprio, Michael Fassbender and Eddie Redmayne.
Among the women, Cate Blanchett was nominated for the romantic drama “Carol, ‘ Brie Larson for psychological thriller ‘Room, ‘ Saoirse Ronan for Irish immigrant tale ‘Brooklyn” and Sarah Silverman for ‘I Smile Back.
The top winners at the SAG awards often go on to win Oscars, such as last year’s best ensemble-winning film “Birdman”, which was named best picture at the Oscars.
Sylvester Stallone was also left off the SAG list for his reprisal of Rocky in “Creed”.
This SAG policy did help a couple of other films land nominations: Rooney Mara (“Carol”) and Alicia Vikander (“The Danish Girl”) got supporting nods, though other awards groups – including the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which announces its Golden Globe nominations Thursday morning – have decided they are leads. But it’s hard to see how the Oscars would shut-out Spotlight in the Supporting Actor category like the Screen Actors Guild did.
Rose’s status in Hollywood continues to rise with the former MTV Australia presenter nominated with her Orange is the New Black cast members for best ensemble in a TV comedy series.
I expect the Globes to brighten the week for the male members of Spotlight’s cast, to champion The Big Short even more than SAG-AFTRA did and, as usual, to throw in a few wild-cards, such as an acting nom for Trainwreck’s lead actress Amy Schumer.
The cast of the Westchester-set series “Mad Me” is nominated for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series.
Adam McKay, director of “The Big Short” stated he was impressed by the vary of subjects coated by the nominations.
TV comedy ensemble nominees are The Big Bang Theory, Modern Family, Orange Is the New Black, Veep, and first-time series ensemble nominees Key & Peele and Transparent.
