Oscar Pistorius Begins Community Service
A video on a local news site, News24, showed Pistorius – in his first public appearance since his release – arriving at the Garsfontein police station in Pretoria and walking past reporters and photographers who were waiting outside the station.
His lawyers said repeatedly that the shamed athlete wanted to work with children after being released from prison but no further details are known about the terms of his community service.
He is under house arrest at his uncle’s mansion in the eastern suburbs of Pretoria.
Pistorius is now serving a five-year sentence for shooting to death girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp and can only leave home for specific reasons, like attending church or for the community service tasks he has been ordered to do.
Pistorius was wearing a black baseball cap and sunglasses when he arrived at Garsfontein police station in the South African capital.
The Paralympian told his trial because he’d mistaken her which he had shot then through a toilet door.
The Supreme Court is expected to announce its decision by the end of the month.
If he was found guilty of murder, he would face a minimum of 15 years in prison.
When he was released, a family spokeswoman said he would serve the rest of his sentence “under the strict conditions that govern correctional supervision”.
Pistorius broke down frequently during the trial, weeping and at times retching as he heard how Steenkamp, a model and law graduate, was hit by hollow-point bullets.
