Oscar Pistorius Case: Reeva Steenkamp’s Mom Still Wants ‘Justice’
In a statement, Masutha indicated that the decision to release Pistorius had been made before he had served a sixth of his sentence.
Oscar Pistorius has been denied early release from prison for killing his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.
“One sixth of a five years sentence is 10 months and at the time the decision was made Mr Pistorius had served only over six months of his sentence”, the ministry said.
Steenkamp’s Family – June Steenkamp spoke through her lawayer Tanya Koen, after hearing about Pistorius’ release under correctional supervision is suspended “this is a victory for women in Women’s Month”, reported The Citizen.
New evidence suggests that the late Reeva Steenkamp may have flushed the toilet moments before she was shot and killed by boyfriend Oscar Pistorius, according to reports.
He has requested the Correctional Supervision and Parole Review Board to review the decision.
South Africa’s Division of Justice on Wednesday blocked Oscar Pistorius’ early launch from jail.
Pistorius’ family accepted the decision but was also considering their options, spokeswoman Anneliese Burgess told the AP. A small group of family and friends gathered to remember Reeva by visiting Summerstrand beach, one of her favorite places and where her ashes were scattered.
Pistorius was convicted of manslaughter for shooting 29-year-old Reeva Steenkamp through a bathroom door in his home, telling the court he believed she was an intruder.
Justice Minister Michael Masutha would now study Pistorius’ “profile” and the original parole board decision, the department said.
Pistorius’s large legal team and family have remained tight-lipped about the latest development in a case already characterized by twists and turns more suited to a television drama.
The state filed its heads of argument at the Supreme Court of Appeal in Bloemfontein on Monday, National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Luvuyo Mfaku said.
However, given the four-month timeframe, it is highly unlikely that Pistorius will be freed before the prosecution’s appeal against his acquittal on murder charges is heard in November.
Steenkamp’s parents June and Barry had been outraged by the idea of Pistorius getting out of jail after just 10 months.
In that petition, the Progressive Women’s Movement of South Africa said the decision of the parole board was “outrageous” and “an insult” to victims of abuse.
