Oscar Pistorius reportedly will be released from prison, put on house arrest
Oscar Pistorius, a paralympic gold medalist who has been sentenced to five-year imprisonment for killing his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp in 2013 is now the object of controversy as prosecutors have filed an appeal days before his release date.
The Daily Mail is reporting that Pistorius’ release to house arrest next Friday after serving 10 months of a five-year prison sentence in the shooting death of girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp is being received with nearly no fanfare from his family.
“Pistorius is due to serve the rest of his term in custodial supervision, a form of house arrest, ” he said.
Pistorius did not apply for parole himself but in June correctional services recommended he be released as early as possible from Pretoria’s Kgosi Mampuru II prison, the Independent reported.
He is expected to stay at his uncle Arnold’s three-storey mansion in a wealthy suburb of Pretoria.
Pistorius testified that he shot Steenkamp after mistaking her for a risky intruder hiding in his bathroom. However, the prosecutors have consistently maintained their appeal that he should be convicted of murder. His sentence has been reduced for good behavior.
Nel will argue that that Masipa had incorrectly applied the principles of dolus eventualis, and that Pistorius should have foreseen that he could kill Steenkamp when he fired four shots through the toilet door.
“10 months for taking a life is simply not enough”.
“However, a person found guilty of a crime must be held accountable for their actions”. If released some suggest it sends the wrong message to others since Oscar Pistorius is considered a role model.
Prosecutors in South Africa are seeking to overturn the verdict and sentence handed to Oscar Pistorius, with the case likely to be heard in November. His lawyers are some of South Africa’s most well known – and the most expensive.
However, the State is to file its heads of argument in its appeal against the Pistorius’ ruling at the Supreme Court of Appeal in Bloemfontein on Monday, News 24 reported.
