Oscar Pistorius will be released to house arrest 10 months after being
The former athlete hasn’t applied for early release but it has been recommended by the prison in Pretoria where he is now being held.
Six-time Paralympic champion Oscar Pistorius will reportedly be released from a South African prison next week after spending 10 months behind bars for killing his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.
The para athlete may find it hard to resume his track career, as it is unlikely that he will be able to leave South Africa for the first stages of his release.
He would not be expected to attend the appeal hearing, in which five judges will be asked to decide whether Judge Thokozile Masipa correctly interpreted the law when she found Pistorius not guilty of murder.
Although Pistorius’ terms for supervision have not been made public by the Department of Correctional Services, he will reportedly be under house arrest at his uncle’s home in Waterkloof, Pretoria. He will likely have to do community service and will be required to check in regularly with a mental health professional.
Despite his early release, Pistorius may yet return to prison following his release as a prosecutors are set to argue that his conviction should be upgraded to murder in November.
His team say the appeal is based only on a legal issue and nothing to do with the State’s initial version that he wanted to kill Reeva and that he has an uncontrollable temper.
He was cleared of murder but found guilty of culpable homicide last year in a highly-publicised trial.
“As her family, we do not seek to avenge her death and we do not want Mr Pistorius to suffer; that will not bring her back to us”.
“A person convicted of a crime must be held accountable”, commented the parents of the young model.
“
We fear that this will not send out the proper message and serve as the deterrent it should.”
