Oscars 2017: Celebrities reacted to Best Picture gaffe in the best way
The statement apologizes to the cast of “La La Land”, which was mistakenly announced as the victor before the correct victor, “Moonlight”, was announced.
Then came the revelation that it was Moonlight, an indie drama about a black youth coming to terms with his sexuality in an impoverished Miami neighbourhood, that had won. Envelopes have been swapped, winners have been named in error, and nominees mistakenly honoured. This is very unfortunate, what happened.
Moonlight has become the first LGBT-themed film to win the best picture Oscar. “They create empathy between us and others, an empathy which we need today more than ever”. Warren wasn’t quite sure so he passed it on to Faye Dunaway, hi co-host and she said La La Land because there was nothing to suggest it was Moonlight. “The envelope, I don’t know if they had the wrong envelope or if there was some kind of envelope malfunction”, Kimmel said.
One new twist I enjoyed was having presenters talk on film about a performance and movie that really influenced them, and then pairing them with those actors/actresses, which gave us a chance to see Shirley MacLaine – still amusing – and Michael J. Fox, still inspiring. “Come on.” She then looked at the card and announced that “La La Land” had won the Best Picture nod. But to hell with dreams, I’m done with it because this is true. “But I will say I saw two cards”, he said. “It is not fake”, regarding La La Land’s producers’ graciousness in their rather humiliating defeat. We’ve been on the road with these guys for so long. “My love to La La Land”. “Of course I was struck by her beauty also and I knew she would be in for the long haul”.
But it was. And is. The film was released almost three months ago, but it’s still out in theaters. While that figure does not include marketing for the film, Moonlight’s producers are clearly seeing a solid return on their investment, as the Oscar victor is certainly one of the cheapest films to ever win the Best Picture Oscar.
“This is not a joke”, “La La Land” producer Fred Berger said.
Sunday night’s enormous, honking 89th Academy Awards Moonlight catastrophe proves my theory that awards mix-ups are always the best bit. The best director victor was no doubt Damien Chazelle for his wonderful work in La La Land, making him the youngest victor in the category in Oscar history. The best original song was announced as Justin Hurwitz for the track City Of Stars from La La Land. He’s the central character in best-picture-nominated “Manchester”, nearly always on screen and, weighed down – as we learn – with grief and guilt.
Despite Emma Stone having her Best Actress card in her hand the whole time, the spare card for her award had wrongly been given to Beatty and Dunaway, causing the confusion.
“Kubo and the Two Strings” is my pick for best animated feature, although “Moana” and “Zootopia” are also worthy nominees.
The awards were handed out in between jokes and attacks on President Donald Trump.
Around three hours later, PwC sent out a tweet acknowledging the error.
TRT World’s Vanessa Conneely has more on the gaffe. I just want to establish that upfront.
Within the Oscar narrative, this serves as a welcome corrective to last year’s #OscarsSoWhite embarrassment, but more than that, it’s a testament to the growing power and reach of narratives about black life in America, as well as the artistry and skill with which they’re being made.
This occurred earlier in the evening, when Oscar host Jimmy Kimmel brought in a busload of tourists, an awkward bit of schtick that turned surreal as “real people” confronted “famous people” and seemed unable to put their cellphones down, holding their devices in front of them like combination crucifixes and video cameras.
“This is my first time here, and the way you people go through hosts it’s probably my last time here”.
