Oscars 2018: Lesser-known facts about the Academy Awards
Coyle: “Call Me By Your Name” stood apart for me. “The Weinstein thing really upended Hollywood”.
At two months old, the Time’s Up movement is catapulting from the red carpet to the main stage – as the activist organization will be formally featured in Sunday’s Academy Awards telecast. More Justin never able to participate in the race for the main movie awards. We’re not doing the Academy Awards anymore. We’re not the Television Academy. “But obviously we want the show to be about entertainment”. So who do we vote for? Only three types of films win the top award every year: movies about Hollywood, very sappy message pictures, and bloated, expensive, endlessly hyped epics. This reportedly is to preserve the artistic integrity of the award.

If you saw three films a year ago you’re an instant Oscar expert. “Netflix has a weird aversion to supporting theatrical films”, Christopher Nolan told IndieWire in July. “And you’ve got movies that wouldn’t have even been nominated, I don’t think, in the past because they would have been dismissed as genre movies – “Shape of Water” and ‘Get Out'”. Horror movies rarely get Academy placement, and the only one to win Best Picture was “The Silence of the Lambs” in 1992. As a result, the most broadly liked film can often triumph over the most passionately loved one. You know, we thought oh it’s a comedy, it’s from Jordan Peele, I saw “Keanu” I’ve seen “Key and Peele” – and this is just on a completely different level, with an fantastic performance from Daniel Kaluuya. “It doesn’t make you feel all warm and fuzzy”. Surely it has nothing to do with devotion to what the Academy pompously refers to as “motion picture arts and sciences”. Victory has brought her role in the film “driving miss Daisy”.
In 2016, every one of the 20 nominees in the Oscars acting categories was white for the second year in a row, prompting activist April Reign to create the hashtag #OscarsSoWhite. “This is a group of females!” I would have done a special photo shoot and [electronic press kit] spots. That nomination makes her the first female director of photography to be nominated for an Oscar.
We favored films that had an outsized impact on the movies that came after them.
Revelations of sexual misconduct in Hollywood have prompted some to say that this could be a game-changing moment for the industry. I’m not saying this is a cut and dry issue, but there’s easily an unconscious bias when it comes to what’s considered an Oscar-caliber performance when it comes to the category of Best Actor. My answer: not really. I liked the point of view. Also the moviegoing experience. Again, “Blade Runner 2049” could challenge “War for the Planet of the Apes” for this one; but come on, I swear they used a real orangutan. Influential people who want to use their powerful platform for advocacy should absolutely be taken seriously-and cross-examined over it. I think the dialogue in this film pushes it over the edge for me. Anything can qualify, practically. However, since women aren’t demanded the same “tough/weak stereotype” that men are, women are allowed to be more creatively vulnerable and can access a larger range of roles from any age, and not just because they hit 40 and pretend to wrestle with bears. “Many markets, many theaters, more money invested”.
With voting among the Academy’s 8,500 members closed since Tuesday, the frenzied and at times schmaltzy campaigning that perennially marks the awards merry-go-round can no longer impact the results. “A lot of people are concerned about it”.
