Oscars Fuck Up Best Picture Announcement [UPDATES]
And many online demanded to know how if Emma Stone had kept her winning envelope, why did it end up in the hands of Warren Beatty?
Today, President Donald Trump hit back at Kimmel, who said in his opening monologue: “I want to say thank you to Donald Trump”.
“Ryan Gosling, thank you for making me laugh and always raising the bar and being the best partner on this insane adventure”, she said.
Once order had been restored, Beatty tried to explain what happened, saying he had been given the wrong envelope.
PwC is responsible for counting the votes and giving the presenters the correct envelopes to read from. However, “La La Land” failed to take numerous technical and writing categories, paving the way for films like “Hacksaw Ridge” and “Manchester by the Sea” (Best Original Screenplay) to earn early wins. Kudos to one of them, Jordan Horowitz, for his graciousness when revealing to a stunned audience that “Moonlight” was the actual victor. She read the words: “La La Land”.
However, bizarrely, the mistake was not rectified immediately.
Honestly, we’re just so confused by this whole envelopegate situation. At Sunday’s ceremony, Brian Culliman of PwC gave Best Picture presenter Warren Beatty the wrong envelope. While La La Land was more jovial and romantic, Moonlight spoke of persecution of blacks and LGBTQ+ communities. “This is very unfortunate, what happened”, Oscars host Jimmy Kimmel joked after the epic flub.
Fellow producer Jordan Horowitz then said: “Guys, I’m sorry, no, there’s a mistake”. It’s true, it’s not fake’.
Let’s just start with the most dramatic win of the night, and not just because of the cast and subject of movie but the totally astonishing announcement! He then held the card up to the audience to prove his point, reading from it: “Moonlight, best picture”.
While the company did not divulge exactly what was printed on the paper, reports have suggested that it was branded with Emma Stone’s name, who won Best Actress for her role in the acclaimed musical earlier in the evening. Craziness breaks out. No one knows how Beatty got a best actress envelope; Stone later tells reporters in the media room that she has been holding her envelope the entire time.
The musical had already won four other awards at the event held at the Dolby Theater, and almost clinched a fifth, until it was revealed Moonlight was the true victor.
