#OscarsSoWhite: No Actors Of Color Received Oscar Nominations This Year
The 2016 Academy Awards nominations are being announced this morning, and some noteworthy noms have already begun trickling in. Whilst these might have been predicted beforehand, there were also quite a few films notable for their absence.
But in what was the biggest nominations surprise, the picture was not one of the eight selected for the top prize, the nominees instead being The Big Short, Bridge of Spies, Brookyln, Mad Max: Fury Road, The Martian, The Revenant, Room and Spotlight.
It can be argued that of all the films served up in 2015 for consideration by the Academy, few focused on black stories.
Less than a week after winning the best screenplay Golden Globe for “Steve Jobs“, frontrunner Aaron Sorkin failed to get a nod for the adapted screenplay category.
Some things change, and others just stay the same.
Among the films that many felt included talent who deserved nominations were Creed, Beasts of No Nation and Straight Outta Compton.
For the second consecutive year, no minorities were nominated in any of the four acting categories. It’s a huge snub for veteran filmmaker Scott who is yet to win a best director Oscar. This year, the hashtag was popular again, with many journalists and observers calling out the Academy Awards for a lack of representation.
The 88th Academy Awards will not include the blockbuster biopic Straight Outta Compton competing for Best Picture.
The F. Gary Gray-directed film has racked up this award season, earning a Critics Choice Award, NAACP Image Award and Screen Actors Guild Award nomination. Chris Rock hosts. See the complete list of nominees right here.
