Osweiler strong as Broncos beat Bears
He sounded the part.
Brock Osweiler made sure he got everyone that could play today involved. So far, I’d say this season has been a success.
Below is a look at the final offensive play of the game for the Bears, the two-point conversion try. Nothing too flashy. Nothing to poke the Bears, or the Patriots. Unfortunately for John Fox and Co. they were on the short end of the stick against a first-time starter at quarterback and the NFL’s top defense in the Denver Broncos.
The Broncos started the season 7-0 and now Manning will be out with an injury, leaving Osweiler to come in and start. Osweiler also was more willing to get his tight ends involved than Manning has been in recent weeks.
Kubiak also said of Osweiler.
Brock made his pitch.
“Hell no, ” said Broncos’ strong safety T.J. Ward, who was sitting to Harris’ left. With Manning’s injuries piling up and no high draft pick in sight, Osweiler could end up the Broncos’ go-to man in the future. But they need to prevent the sacks. Last week Manning’s play drove him right out of the game following four interceptions and even more poor passes. He threw for 250 yards on 20 completions-12.5 yards per completion-and threw two touchdowns. And go back to Gary Kubiak and what he wanted to do in the beginning of the season with the play-action game and boot legs, that may be a better fit right now with Brock Osweiler than it was with Peyton. Trevathan nabbed it, then returned it to the Bears’ 25.
One fumble caromed to Malik Jackson (“I’m an honorary member of the ‘No Fly Zone, ‘” he announced); one interception sailed directly to Danny Trevathan.
“I think we – I don’t know – lost our minds for a second”, McClellin said of Broncos’ success.
This isn’t so much a knock on Manning as it is a reality of Denver’s current state at the quarterback position. Plus, he can work directly under center, rather than out of the shotgun as Manning usually does because of his limitations. But it shouldn’t be next week. No matter what the mind wants, in sports, it doesn’t matter unless the body is on the same page. Osweiler can even make throws that Manning can’t so it might be about that time now.
On the plus side, Osweiler was very accurate overall and finished the first half on a very good note.
You don’t have to be Carl Jung to ascertain that Manning is bothered by only having one Super Bowl ring to show for his almost two decades worth of time spent in the NFL.
About 10 minutes remained and the coach of a team with three fourth-quarter comebacks this season prematurely concluded the offense didn’t have another long drive in it. Fox obviously is not among those in town referring to Cutler as “Mr. Fourth Quarter”. The Broncos waited on the team plane, for four-plus hours, thanks to a sudden snowstorm that turned the Windy City into a wild, winter wonderland. “Here’s the deal: We got healthier here today”. They wouldn’t miss this.
Emerging from behind the quarterback curtain, their son delivered a speech to the team at its hotel.
“I knew that was coming”, the Broncos coach told reporters when asked about Denver’s quarterback situation, via Pro Football Talk. “I kind of came out here and expected it. What he did is what I expected him to do”.
