Osweiler, Trevathan lead AFC West-leading Broncos to 17-3 win against
What’s been uprooted is the notion the Broncos would collapse without Manning, the five-time NFL MVP.
-Quarterback Peyton Manning will miss at least one more game because of a plantar fascia tear. “We did what we had to do to stay into it”. He was intercepted once. That 8-1 run has finally allowed the Broncos to even the score with the Rivers-led Chargers, who went 9-2 at Denver’s expense from November 2006 through October 2011.
This might have been the penultimate Chargers game in San Diego.
Von Miller and Darian Stewart recovered second-half fumbles as the Broncos shut out the Chargers after the break.
“You’re not going to play if you put the ball on the ground”, McCoy said. “Just a bad play all the way around”. Of Rivers’ nine interceptions this season, five have been returned for touchdowns.
“It’s one of those things when you’ve got somebody flustered, pouting and stuff, you just want to make sure you keep him on that level, because he’s not thinking about other things”, DE Malik Jackson said.
The Broncos defense took over after that.
“I can’t tell you”, Rivers said after being asked why it’s been so hard to score points at home. “That is how we want it to be every week”. We couldn’t finish drives and then we had the turnovers.
The Broncos pushed it to 17-0 on Brandon McManus’ 23-yard field goal late in the second quarter. Lambo was wide right on a 48-yard attempt earlier in the second quarter.
On the Denver Broncos third possession, Denver went for a deep pass and this time it was Brandon Flowers of the San Diego Chargers who found himself taken off the field on a cart.
The opening drive “was our best, running and throwing”, Thomas said. “It was a bad play all the way the around”.
The Denver Broncos received the football to start the game and Brock Osweiler drove his team down field and capped the drive off with a strike to Demaryius Thomas for a touchdown pass. And from there, Brock and company were ahead the rest of the game. Most of their drives were no longer than 25 yards, and they turned the ball over twice (once on a Philip Rivers’ interception that was returned for a touchdown and once on a Melvin Gordon fumble). Each catch was greeted with a roar, as Broncos fans filled Qualcomm Stadium.
“We’re 10-2, now we have to work to get to 11-2”, he said after the win.
“Oh my god, it was unbelievable how much orange”, he said. They combined for six completions and 50 yards but more was needed.
Chargers receiver Dontrelle Inman suffered a scary injury in the first quarter. GM Tom Telesco signed a contract extension…. The offensive line never stood a chance against the Broncos’ pass rush, not even with All-Pro DeMarcus Ware sitting out due to a back injury. Broncos ILB Danny Trevathan left the game with a concussion.
