Osweiler, Trevathan lead Broncos to win against Bolts
Denver Broncos wide receiver Demaryius Thomas (88) scores a touchdown as San Diego Chargers defensive back Jahleel Addae (37) defends during the third quarter at Qualcomm Stadium.
With about five minutes left, Broncos fans cheered a scoreboard update showing Philadelphia leading New England.
The San Diego Chargers (3-8) are coming from a 31-25 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars. “I was not used to that”. New England lost their second straight game Sunday, 35-28 at home to the Philadelphia Eagles. They will be facing one of the most aggressive defenses in the league, who have gotten after the quarterback like insane with 37; enough to lead the league.
This isn’t the first time the Chargers have felt like the road team in their own stadium.
Thomas blamed his yips on a combination of bad weather – “I’m anxious about falling and slipping” – and not letting the drops go.
Defensively, the Broncos pass rush was unstoppable and the Chargers couldn’t get thier running game going either.
Not literally, of course; he walked away to fight another day for a team that he has carried on his back at times during 10 seasons as a starter. The Broncos were positioned for the knockout punch when Osweiler tossed an untimely interception in the end zone. “We did what we had to do to stay in it”.
“It was not a good throw”, Rivers said. “That’s what we do every time we play somebody”. As long as we keep winning that is our main thing right now. “Getting a win last week, getting another week of preparation, Play a division opponent, we’ll be riled up and ready to go”. Thomas caught the 44th touchdown pass of his career on the Broncos’ opening drive, tying him with Haven Moses and Lionel Taylor at No. 4 on the Broncos’ all-time list for touchdown receptions. He rumbled in to make it 14-0.
The first half ended with a score of 17-3 in favor of the Denver Broncos. The link was Noel Mazzone, Rivers’ offensive coordinator his senior year at North Carolina State and Osweiler’s O-coordinator at Arizona State.
After all, Philip Rivers is still alive and quarterbacking with the best of them, thank you. It was his second-lowest yardage of the season. They just don’t seem to trust it enough and feel like Rivers needs to throw the ball all over the field. “Just a bad play all the way around”.
Denver’s other touchdown happened to be a pick-six by Danny Trevathan which extended the leader and the Broncos never looked back.
Brandon McManus added a 23-yard field goal. With just 0:01 left of the clock, Davis caught a Brock Osweiler pass only to be hit with a helmet to helmet. He was able to move his hands and feet, the team said.
Moments later, Chargers cornerback Brandon Flowers was also carted off the field. He too was taken off the field on a cart with a knee injury.
The Chargers came out of halftime and showed life early with two first downs aided by a 20-yard run by Melvin Gordon.
NOTES: Chargers LT King Dunlap (ankle) and RG D.J. Fluker (concussion) didn’t start….
