OT decision comes back to bite Patriots
Bill Belichick’s odd overtime coin toss decision earned him plenty of unflattering press – including the Daily News’ back page – since the Patriots’ 26-20 overtime loss to the Jets, but the veteran head coach remained steadfast that he made the correct choice.
New York Jets defensive end Sheldon Richardson sacks New England Patriots QB Tom Brady during Sunday’s game in East Rutherford, N.J.
New York Jets wide receiver Eric Decker (87) jumps on quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick (14) after the two connected for a touchdown for a win in the overtime period of an NFL football game against the New England Patriots Sunday, …
However, with yesterday’s thrilling overtime win by the NY Jets over the New England Patriots, things got out of hand when opposing fans got into a fight in the parking lot outside MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
The Jets aren’t quite in the playoffs yet; they’ll still need to beat the Bills and ex-head coach Rex Ryan next Sunday in Buffalo, and oh my what a week this is going to be between now and then. It’s nearly like the coaches are intentionally handcuffing this offense so as not to give too much away heading into the playoffs.
I think if the Patriots active list wasn’t so sketchy, Belichick would have surely given Brady the ball with the first chance to finish the game.
Belichick had won an overtime game two years ago using the “take the wind” strategy. Until their game-tying drive, the Patriots had been limited to just two field goals on 218 yards of total offense.
The only way to flip the script was for the Jets to make the plays that were previously owned by the Patriots. Now they have to travel to Miami, where they have historically played poorly, and win to secure the top seed in the AFC.
The Jets are in their 10 personnel, lining up with Ivory in the backfield, Marshall split to the left, and Thompkins, Decker, and Enunwa to the right.
If things line up right and Manning returns from his left foot injury next month, there could still be 17th matchup between Brady and Manning, either in MA or Colorado, after their scheduled faceoff was scuttled last month. “But we always said let’s finish this drive, and we had an opportunity and we did”.
Meanwhile, the Carolina Panthers were beaten 20-13 by the Atlanta Falcons, ending the team’s unbeaten streak in the National Football League.
With his first catch of the game, Marshall broke the Jets’ single-season record for most receptions, set in 1988 by Al Toon (93). Of course, their defense will keep them in games.
Trump took issue with Clinton’s statement on Sunday’s Fox and Friends as well, telling the hosts, “She’s got to be careful, you know”.
Darrelle Revis also made a great play, picking off a Brady throw in the first half which led to a field goal.
“I think we have some mental toughness”, Brady said.
Later that season when he talked about the decision, Rivera said it freed him as a coach, making him more confident, less afraid.
How does New England go about accomplishing those goals, which, at times, differ? NY led New England 10-3 at halftime.
Brady finished the game 22-of-31 for 231 yards with one touchdown. It was a close choice, but for the sake of switching it up the player of the game was Brandon Marshall. His third touchdown pass now ties him with Vinny Testaverde for a Jets team record of 29 TD passes in a season.
