Ottawa Redblacks denied their TD celebration
Late in the first half, Reilly connected with Akeem Shavers for another Edmonton touchdown. Reilly also led the Eskimos in rushing with 66 yards.
Reilly finished 21-of-35 for 269 yards and two touchdown passes and was named the game’s Most Valuable Player while Burris – a former Ticat who was critical of Hamilton head coach Kent Austin this week – threw for 220 yards on 22-of-29 passing, two touchdowns and the pick.
“We definitely got to rally, you just look at Ellingson’s play one broken tackle got them to the Grey Cup”, Sherritt said. “However, in response to concerns raised, and as the game is meant to be at played at a neutral site, the touchdown celebration that normally occurs at Redblacks’ home games will not be allowed between kickoff and the final gun”.
“I wanted to get it for my family, the guys in this locker-room, and for the city of Ottawa”. The RedBlacks, in just their second season of existence, were trying to become the second team to win a Grey Cup one year after recording two wins or fewer but came up just short.
“Kudos to Edmonton. They made plays and we didn’t and that’s the reason why they won the game”.
The heralded Edmonton defence is influenced by head coach and defensive guru Chris Jones and led up front by one of the most outgoing characters in the league, defensive end Odell Willis.
First the Redblacks coach quipped his 40-year-old quarterback will play another 10 years before giving Burris a shout-out for singing a verse from Billy Joel’s “We Didn’t Start The Fire”.
The Eskimos defeated the Ottawa Redblacks 26-20 for their 14th Grey Cup victory – and first since 2005 – in a game that started out fast and furious with the teams combining for 23 points in the first quarter before evolving into a brutal defensive struggle with a lot of big hits in the second half.
“The balls that we’re going to have, if I can make a comparison, are kind of like what a basketball feels like – where you have all the dimples on it. That’s what it feels like, which is a bit weird”.
“We will watch this over and over and over again this off-season and make sure we remember this”, Burris said.
Adarius Bowman and Shavers scored Edmonton’s touchdowns.
And in the second quarter, the West Division champions kept coming. Whyte booted a convert, single and field goal while Grant Shaw added another single.
Henry Burris found Patrick Lavoie for a touchdown on the REDBLACKS first posession of the game.
Ottawa’s Chris Milo also was apprehensive. A previous version had the wrong time if the winning touchdown in the first paragraph.
