Ottawa REDBLACKS vs. Edmonton Eskimos in 103rd Grey Cup
Henry Burris is expecting the unexpected.
The Edmonton Eskimos scored a late touchdown in the 4th quarter to beat the Ottawa REDBLACKS 26-20 in the 103rd Grey Cup.
Ottawa committed two pass interference penalties to set up Edmonton with great field position. “They found ways to make plays and to get us off the field … Making our adjustments on the sideline and at halftime are going to be critical”.
It was a defensive struggle in the second quarter, with Chris Milo increasing the Redblacks’ lead with a field goal before Reilly connected with Akeem Shavers for a two-yard touchdown before the half.
The Eskimos have won 14 Grey Cups in their history.
The Eskimos then put together a long touchdown drive in the final three minutes of the half.
“He’s pretty good”, Jones said of his quarterback.
“We’re not going to panic”, Jones said. “But it may be from six weeks or eight weeks ago”.
“I wanted to get it for my family, the guys in this locker-room, and for the city of Ottawa”. They looked set to retake the lead after a successful fake punt moved them into Ottawa territory but Whyte clanked a 35-yarder of the right upright and the Redblacks to a one-point advantage into the fourth. Whyte spent four years in Montreal but was let go during training camp before joining the Eskimos in September.
Jay Ferguson, 28, from Edmonton, arrived in Winnipeg with two friends Thursday and has been living and breathing the Grey Cup ever since. Whyte made all 14 converts he tried while Milo finished 34 of 38.
After a field goal drew the Eskimos within 10 and the defense picked Burris off, Reilly hit Adarius Bowman for a 23-yard touchdown in the corner of the end zone to help make it a 13-10 game. Justin Capicciotti led the Redblacks with 12 sacks to finish third overall. While a two-point convert was unsuccessful, the 10-play, 88-yard drive was huge as it erased a horrid start for the West Division champions, who fell behind 13-0 before the game was seven minutes old.
Patrick Lavoie and Earnest Jackson had Ottawa’s touchdowns.
