‘Our handsome little boy has gone’: Family confirm Charlie Gard has died
He flew to London and began leading public prayers outside of Great Ormond Street Hospital. The pediatric hospital Bambino Gesù in Rome, known as “the pope’s hospital”, offered to care for the boy.
Charlie is not expected to survive to his 1 birthday on August 4. The rare genetic condition causes progressive muscle weakness and brain damage. The judge said he would consider any evidence that it would work for Charlie.
May God welcome Charlie Gard into his loving embrace in his final days on earth and bring his parents comfort and strength.
GOSH said Charlie’s parents were given false expectation by Dr. Michio Hirano, the Columbia University neurology teacher who said his nucleoside sidestep treatment could cure the kid. Human rights advocates said the case showed what happens when children are seen as property of the state rather than offspring loved into the world by their parents. At a hearing Wednesday, the judge said Charlie will end his days in a hospice.
“The American and Italian teams were still willing to treat Charlie”, he said, “but there is one simple reason why treatment can not now go ahead – and that is time”.
Great Ormond Street Hospital in London, Britain’s premier children’s hospital, reported that its doctors and nurses were receiving serious threats over Charlie’s case. They had been denied the chance to take him to the US for experimental treatment as well as their wish to spend a week with him in hospice care at home.
They said a hospice would be a better plan, and they said life-support treatment should end shortly after Charlie arrived at a hospice. He will not be allowed to go home, as his parents wished. However, their first choice was to take Charlie to the United States for an experimental treatment.
After attracting celebrity backing and widespread support on social media, the “Charlie’s Fight” campaign went on to raise more than stg£1.3m (€1.45m) through donations from more than 84,000 people. The parents thought of considering the treatment, but the doctors in London contradicted them on this decision, as it could cause more suffering for Charlie Gard.
However, the courts and hospital refused to allow them to transfer their son to another hospital.
His passing comes a day after a British judge ruled Charlie be moved to hospice care, where he’d be taken off life support.
But the guardian’s lawyer, Victoria Butler-Cole, later said the person in question was a general medical doctor with no experience of intensive care, and that he had not identified any hospice willing to undertake intensive care for a long period. “The damage has been done”, Mr Armstrong said.
Judge Francis had scheduled a two-day hearing to consider fresh evidence by Dr Hirano who had come to London from Columbia Medical Center in NY to examine Charlie.
Two Republican congressmen, Trent Franks of Arizona and Brad Wenstrup of OH, went so far as to introduce a bill in the House of Representatives earlier this month that would have granted permanent residence in the United States to Charlie and his parents.
Before the judge gave his ruling Charlie’s mother, Connie Yates came out to the courtroom in extreme pain.
The decision comes after the terminally ill baby’s parents announced their decision to withdraw a legal battle against the hospital that had been going around for months.
But the court battle was not over yet.
His parents requested a week at home with Charlie before dying, with Yates saying the hospital “denied us our final wish” after the deadline passed.
It was not immediately clear if the child died in hospice. The parents wanted him home. Schindler spoke with LifeNews exclusively about their invitation. We’ve have had no control over our son’s life and no control over our son’s death. “The critical issue here is not a political one, but the simple notion that families know what is best for their loved ones”.
