Our mid-range phones will get cutting-edge features before our flagships — Samsung
Why now, though? Samsung conducted consumer surveys on the topic and now feels confident there is a market for a folding phone (not to be confused with a flip phone).
Koh added that the device may be unveiled at the Samsung Developer Conference in November. The first cryptic tweet by the tipster did not reveal much, but hinted at the presence of four cameras on a Samsung smartphone.
It’s been more than six years since Samsung first showed off its vision for the future of smartphone screen technology. Overall Samsung is looking for the use-case which says “wow, this is the reason Samsung made it”, simplified Koh.
Compared to Samsung’s 2018 flagships, the Galaxy S10 line should debut in-screen fingerprint readers and possibly even feature a depth-sensing 3D camera setup.
For those who missed the memo, the Samsung Galaxy X (name subject to change) is a smartphone with a difference. “But I have changed my strategy from this year to bring technology and differentiation points starting from the mid-end”, said Koh.
In 2014, Samsung released a concept ad for the potential foldable phone, which you can see below.
Huawei CEO, Richard Yu, has earmarked 2021 as the year Shenzhen-based company will overtake Samsung as the largest smartphone manufacturer in the world.
It’s expected to have a 7-inch display that, when folded, features a camera on the back and a small display bar on the front. Opened up, the device is said to be like a small tablet in stature, making it flawless for watching media or reading books, depending on what the situation is with that screen. Unlike other devices that may be ready to ship to customers within a couple weeks after their launch date, the foldable Samsung phone may not actually hit the street until 2019 and at a hefty price tag. It’s widely assumed that they will be using a foldable display, rather than rehashing existing “foldable” phones that have flopped.
