Outrage as Oscar Pistorius confirmed for release on August 21
OSCAR PISTORIUS will be released from prison next week after serving just 10 months of his five-year sentence.
Pistorius did not apply for early release himself – but was recommended for it by the parole board at the Kgosi Mampuru II prison.
Pistorius is set to leave prison on August 21, exactly 10 months after his sentence hearing, but he will still be under the control of the Department of Correctional Services.
He claimed afterwards he had shot her by accident having mistaken her for a burglar.
The Telegraph reports due to the conditions of his release, it will be unlikely he will be able to compete again.
At first, Pistorius will live under virtual house arrest at his uncle’s home in Pretoria’s upmarket Waterkloof suburb.
As well as the habitual parole conditions including abstaining from alcohol and drugs or touching guns, he is likely to be instructed to undertake anger management courses as well as community service.
As part of his initial supervision, Pistorius’s travel will be severely restricted.
According to The Independent, the late Steenkamp’s parents protested the early release, saying in a statement “incarceration of 10 months for taking a life is simply not enough”.
His team say the appeal is based only on a legal issue and nothing to do with the State’s initial version that he wanted to kill Reeva and that he has an uncontrollable temper.
Pistorius was convicted of culpable homicide-which, in South Africa, is essentially manslaughter-in September of previous year.
Kelly Phelps, a criminal justice lecturer at the University of Cape Town, said that Pistorius’s release to correctional supervision was in line with standard criminal justice practice.
In December, Judge Masipa granted prosecutors permission to appeal her finding at the Supreme Court of Appeal.
In a strongly worded letter, which officials said had been taken into consideration, they said: “We do not seek to avenge her death and we do not want Mr Pistorius to suffer; that will not bring her back to us”. If released some suggest it sends the wrong message to others since Oscar Pistorius is considered a role model.
