Over one million United Kingdom cars in VW emissions scandal
Of Volkswagen’s own cars, more than half a million are affected, while 393,450 Audi cars have software installed, as well as 76,773 SEATs and 131,569 Škoda vehicles.
The British arm of Volkswagen today said it would recall and fix nearly 1.2 million vehicles affected by the emissions cheating scandal.
The company admitted that 11 million of their cars have been fitted with the software that cheats emissions tests.
The automaker says its first step is to inform affected customers “that the emissions characteristics of their vehicles will be corrected in the near future”.
VW intends to submit the details of the plan to government regulators next month; if approved, the company would establish websites to guide drivers of affected vehicles.
“There’s a lot of media hype about this”, said the general manager of another car-dealer who asked not to be identified. The Volkswagen parent company itself is responsible for the biggest chunk of the 1.1 crore vehicles with about 50 lakh affected cars worldwide.
EPA VW engineers deliberately used a defeat device to make its diesel engines pass emissions tests.
“I have made clear to the managing director this needs to happen as soon as possible”.
On September 18, the German giant was exposed by the USA authorities of fitting its diesel cars with devices that can switch on pollution controls when they detect the auto is undergoing testing.
German prosecutors have launched a preliminary investigation into Volkswagen subsidiary Audi related to the scandal over rigged emissions, a newspaper reported on Wednesday.
Volkswagen Group United Kingdom announced its plan to modify diesel vehicles with EA 189 engines.
He added that around 4,000 vehicles were affected across the Volkswagen, Audi, Skoda and Seat brands. How the refit would affect vehicles’ mileage or efficiency is also unknown.
Leigh Day, a law firm that is investigating potential legal claims on behalf of VW owners in Britain, has written to the firm’s new CEO Matthias Mueller, demanding that the vehicle manufacturer agree to a compensation settlement.
