Pachauri sent on leave, Chawla named new TERI chief
Women’s rights groups protested today in front of the TERI office in New Delhi, condemning RK Pachauri’s “promotion” as the executive vice chairman of the organisation.
The Governing Council of TERI met on Friday and appointed Ashok Chawla, former Union Finance Secretary and former Chairman of the Competition Commission, as its new chairman.
TERI said that the process for the replacement of Pachauri as DG had culminated after the appointment of Mathur as DG with full executive powers on July 23 previous year.
The Institute has been mired in a major controversy due to alleged sexual harassment charges against Pachauri, who had to proceed on “leave” from TERI, its governing council as well as the university.
POLICE on Thursday told the Delhi High Court that it was likely to file a chargesheet within 15 days in the sexual harassment case registered in February previous year against environmentalist R K Pachauri by a former TERI colleague. The Council looks forward to his leadership of this important institute.
“The decision to appoint Ajay Mathur is the culmination of an extensive search process and an intensive evaluation of candidates from across the globe”, TERI said.
Meanwhile, another former employee of TERI has accused Pachauri of harassing her sexually. He also confirmed that he will skip Teri University’s convocation scheduled for March 7.
On 11 February, Pachauri went on leave from the Chancellor’s position at TERI University after several alumni wrote to the university administration refusing to receive their degree from Pachauri at the upcoming convocation.
She further said that her letters to DCP South and Police Commissioner didn’t get any response, no statements were taken in this regard.
The Indian Express quotes the students’ letter, “We reiterate the trajectory that the university is taking is risky and grossly inconsiderate, and as alumni, we sincerely hope that Teri University’s board of management seriously re-evaluates Pachauri’s continuing role as chancellor…”
