Pacific Rim 2 delayed indefinitely by Legendary Pictures
More on the story below.
The first Pacific Rim was produced as part of Legendary’s partnership with Warner Bros., which is no longer a strong one.
In a lengthy article over on The Hollywood Reporter about the relationship between Universal and Warner Bros., allegedly strained in the wake of Legendary’s Kong: Skull Island being moved from the former to the latter, several upcoming releases were discussed, including Pacific Rim 2. However, because of a costly production budget, being a high grossing film does not guarantee a sequel. Though the sequel was previously set for an August 4, 2017 release, that date will now be pushed back, at best; at worst, the project will be scrapped entirely.
According to Forbes, the reasoning is most likely that Universal has an abundance of surefire franchises and sequels in the works, including “Fast 8”, “Jurassic World 2″, “Despicable Me 3” and “Pitch flawless 3”.
Previous reports about the film suggest that the film will pick up some time after the events of the first film. I love writing for Charlie and Burn.
Guillermo del Toro’s Jaegers are in danger of rusting before Pacific Rim 2 ever steps its giant mecha feet into theaters, since Legendary has halted production indefinitely. But the studio doesn’t feel that Pacific Rim’s box office performance warrants a sequel.
With Legendary producing all these mega monster and mecha films, fans had hoped to see some sort of crossover.
Del Toro was planning to start shooting in November, but Legendary has decided to put the project on the back burner for now. Or are you too busy feeling devastated by this Pacific Rim news?
