Packers’ Cobb released from hospital after chest injury
It is Carolina’s fourth appearance in the NFC title game and first since 2005.
On the first play of overtime, Carson Palmer spun away from a defender and throw across his body to an uncovered Larry Fitzgerald. He was tackled at the 5.
Two plays later, Palmer flipped a shovel pass to Fitzgerald, who streaked from the left and bulled his way into the end zone. My eyes lit up in the huddle. The stadium rocked with chants of Lar-ry!
“It feels good”, Palmer said, per NFL Network on Twitter.
“Most teams would’ve probably played prevent (defense on the last drive)”.
“We’re a resilient team and we believe”, said Fitzgerald, who finished the game with eight catches for 176 yards.
The Cardinals (14-3), the No. 2 seed in the NFC West, will play the victor of the Seattle-Carolina game Sunday for the NFC title and a spot in the Super Bowl.
When referee Clete Blakeman tossed the coin before the start of overtime in the NFC divisional playoff game between Green Bay and Arizona on Saturday night, it never actually flipped.
“Losing in that fashion, especially with the offense pulling that out, another ‘Hail Mary, ‘ is unbelievable”, Packers linebacker Clay Matthews said.
The Cardinals thought they had won until Rodgers, in a play reminiscent of Green Bay’s win over Detroit this season, took the snap with 5 seconds to play, scrambled and threw to the end zone.
“It’s tough”, Rodgers said of coming up short, per the Packers’ Twitter account. “I saw Jeff briefly and I just tried to put some air on it to give him a chance”.
“The rule book does not specify when the coin must be re-tossed, but the referee used his judgment to determine that basic fairness dictated that the coin should flip for the toss to be valid”, National Football League spokesman Michael Signora said in an email to The Associated Press on Sunday. “There were freaky plays made by both teams”.
The Packers, already without wide receiver Davonte Adams, lost Randall Cobb in the first quarter to a chest injury.
Again Rodgers was pressured by the Arizona pass rush before he heaved a desperation Hail Mary pass into the end zone that came down in the hands of Packer receiver Jeff Janis, who was only on the field because of the nearly total depletion of the Packers’ usual receiver corps.
Palmer, meanwhile, completed 25 of 41 passes for 349 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions.
The Packers (11-7) took the kickoff but went nowhere and turned the ball over on downs, setting up Chandler Catanzaro’s 38-yard field goal that put Arizona up 20-13 with 1:55 to play. Things looked exceeding grim for the Packers on their final possession, where they faced a fourth-and-20 from their own 4-yard line with 55 seconds left in the game. Rodgers scrambled and threw 60 yards to Janis at the 36.
Rodgers completed 24 of 44 passes for 261 yards, two touchdowns and an interception as the Packers lost on the last play of the game in the playoffs for the fifth time in seven postseason losses under head coach Mike McCarthy, per ESPN.com’s Jason Wilde. Rodgers said he got an explanation from Blakeman. Man, he made a play, didn’t he? “My (darn) jaw was on the ground”. The interception was upheld upon review and Eddie Lacy broke free for a 61-yard run up the middle two plays later to set up Janis’ score. Cobb left the game injured after the catch.
