Packers cut Tim Masthay, add Jacob Schum as punter
The Green Bay Packers made some cuts today as they work to get down to the limit by Tuesday’s deadline.
“There’s so few jobs available that just like I told Pete [Mortell] the other day, it takes getting the right opportunity at the right time and performing in that moment”. That’s what I’m interested in doing. Schum will wear No. 10 for the Packers.
“After winning the NFC Championship, general manager Ted Thompson, usually tight-lipped and not prone to public praise, said, “(Masthay) won the game for us.
However, Masthay performed poorly in the playoff loss at Arizona, with a 35.8-yard gross average and 32.8-yard net average on four punts inside the Cardinals’ dome stadium. Mortell had been battling Tim Masthay for the punting job.
Although he was inconsistent in the team’s season-ending loss to Arizona in the playoffs, Masthay was at his best down the stretch last season, averaging 44.9 net yards per punt in December. It’s unlikely any starters play, but it will be intense on the field for the players that are trying to make the roster for both teams.
“As far as I’m concerned, this is still a phase of camp where I’m still fighting to earn a roster spot and fighting to be prepared to be an asset here during the season if and when I am on the roster”.
By claiming Schum, the Packers get to see him in a game atmosphere rather than just in a workout setting.
“He’s really excited about playing in Green Bay”, Schum’s agent, Corey Williams said. Mortell, who played college ball at Minnesota, averaged 42.0 net yards. The final roster cutdown to 53 players is on Saturday. But Masthay punted more consistently in practice and had better hang times throughout camp. “Obviously, I think in the National Football League, it’s an on-going process”.
