Packers DT Boyd suffers broken ankle
The Packers did just fine Sunday without running back Eddie Lacy for much of their win over the Seahawks, but they would rather not have to do it again. Jordy Nelson is out for the season with a torn ACL, and receiver Davante Adams is now playing through an ankle injury.
Lacy was injured in the first quarter and did not return to the game.
This week, the Packers return to primetime as they host a tough Kansas City team on Monday night.
Mike McCarthy’s teams have opened double-digit leads in 91 of the 146 regular-season games (62.3 percent) he has coached. During the Green Bay Packers’ press conference on Monday night, he mentioned that “Eddie was here today for treatment, and we’ll see how he moves around Thursday”. That said the Packers will not be rushing Lacy to get back from this injury, as his long term health is going to be more important when the season eventually enters the late stretch of the season. Throughout most of the night the Packers were sending receivers up the field trying to create big plays in the passing game.
The good news for the Packers and Lacy, the X-ray results for his ankle came back negative, although it is still uncertain when he will be able to play.
“It’s one of his best or was his best football game as a Green Bay Packer, in my opinion”, McCarthy said of Raji. Lacy could be questionable for the game and the Monday start gives him a chance to have another day to recover from the ankle issue. Last season he rushed for 1,139 yards and nine touchdowns. He had spent part of past year on their practice squad. It’s a medical decision. “There’s a process that goes on with every player that goes through this, and it’ll be no different with Eddie”. The next couple of days I’ll reflect on that and then I’ll say, ‘OK, we still have a whole season.’ But it’s definitely a surreal moment.
James Starks is a very solid running back, but he simply isn’t capable of taking over the type of production that Lacy can give the Packers. He returned to the game after halftime. This leaves running back James Starks atop the Green Bay Packers’ depth chart. Once Montgomery caught the ball he turned up field, bounces off of a Richard Sherman form tackle, pinballs off of a mighty Bobby Wagner hit and is eventually forced out of bounds by DeShawn Shead after a gain of 17 yards. A move to the injured reserve list appears imminent as the Packers have signed linebacker Joe Thomas to the roster. Boyd, a third-year pro, had to be carted off the field after sustaining an ankle injury in the first half Sunday.
The Seahawks have plenty to be optimistic about as the season progresses, including a game against Jimmy Clausen and the Bears on deck, but I think this team at 0-2 (for the first time since they went 7-9 in 2011) is in some serious trouble to start this season.
