Padres starters Cashner, Rea to Marlins in 7-player deal
ESPN’s Buster Olney was the first to report the move, with Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports confirming the deal. That doesn’t mean he can’t be good this year either though his numbers are pretty rough (4.98 ERA and and a 1.46 WHIP), but for right now it is a “future” move for Miami just in case Cashner this year doesn’t pan out.
The Marlins also received minor league righty reliever Tayron Guerrero. This year he’s 0-1 with a 5.95 ERA in four starts with the Marlins, and 3-4 with a 4.09 ERA in 10 starts for Triple-A New Orleans.
The Padres’ new starting five likely will be comprised of Cosart, Clemens, rookie Luis Perdomo and minor league signees Christian Friedrich and Edwin Jackson. Clemens, whom the Padres claimed off waivers from the Marlins, made a spot start July 20 at St. Louis. Cosart went 13-11 in 2014 with Houston and Miami but has struggled since. He has a career record of 30-49 with a 3.73 ERA in seven seasons. The 19-year-old was chosen 12th overall in the 2015 MLB Draft. With 2 months of the season left, 5 games isn’t big at all. 269 (92-for-342) with 24 doubles, two triples, nine home runs, 54 RBI and 42 runs scored in 89 games for Single-A Greensboro this season, being named a Midwest League Mid-Season All-Star. Naylor has been regarded by some scouts as being “all hit” and will be limited to 1B through his whole career.
Naylor was rated as the Marlins’ top prospect.
Capps is out for the season after having Tommy John surgery during spring training. Known for his quirky, hop-step follow through, Capps finished last season with a remarkable 16.8 K/9 rate, and should bolster the San Diego bullpen next season. Sitting second place in the NL East, going 55-47 on the year, Miami has the potential to catch up to the Nationals. Castillo will likely report to High A Lake Elsinore, but could be in AA San Antonio soon. They wanted to acquire two starters at the deadline and have done it in one fell swoop.
They will join fellow former Padres pitcher Fernando Rodney on the playoff contending squad.
