Padres Trade Venable to Texas
258 with a. 318 on base percentage, 10 doubles, 11 stolen bases, three triples, six home runs and 30 RBIs in 98 games for the Padres this season.
The Rangers don’t need to add Venable to the 25-man list until Thursday, however they cleared a 40-man spot by assigning outfielder Michael Choice for task.
Venable, 32, hit. 252 with 694 hits, 81 homers and a. 727 OPS in eight seasons with the Padres.
Josh Hamilton’s injury appears to be managable and will not keep him from being the primary option in left field.
What the move does is open the door for Jankowski, a center fielder. 254 with six home runs and 21 RBI. Or, do the Rangers want a veteran player to use in an outfield platoon to give DeShields and Choo time off down the stretch?
Venable was surprised to be dealt after the July 31 nonwaiver trade deadline, but is excited to be in a playoff hunt. The deal for Venable comes within the wake of outfielder Leonys Martin being positioned on the disabled listing. The veteran outfielder was acquired in a trade with the Padres on Tuesday.
The 24-year-old right-hander was removed from Monday night’s game with a towel over his bloody face and taken to a hospital. Venable likely replaces Ryan Strausborger on the 25 man roster, unless Josh Hamilton goes to the d.l. He is coming off Tommy John surgery on his right arm in June and had been playing in Class A.
