Pak Police Take Nawaz Sharif, Maryam into Custody

The former Prime Minister was awarded ten years in jail and his daughter was awarded eight years of imprisonment.

Accountability judge Mohammad Bashir, who convicted Sharif family in Avenfield properties references, has recused himself from hearing two pending corruption references against ousted prime minister Nawaz Sharif, Dawn has learned.

The pair surrendered to officials of the National Accountability Bureau less than two weeks before polling in Pakistan’s general election and as Sharif’s Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N) party appears to be losing ground to Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaaf.

On Sunday, Pakistani authorities opened a criminal investigation into leaders of PML-N under an anti-terrorism law.

He said the major clashes took place late last night between the PML-N workers, police and rangers at the Joray Pul, some five km away from Lahore airport, where the PML-N rally was stopped. Police was deployed in large numbers across the city and roads leading to the airport were blocked to prevent Sharif supporters from reaching the airport.

Nawaz Sharif’s legal team was allowed to meet him briefly a day after he was shifted to Adiala jail on the outskirts of Rawalpindi.

According to a notification issued by the Islamabad administration, the rest house at the Sihala Police Training College has been turned into a sub-jail for Sharif and Maryam with immediate effect until further orders.

The father-daughter duo, who left for Pakistan from London on Thursday, earlier arrived at Abu Dhabi on Friday, where they had a six-hour lay-off. Adiala Jail officials said that the couple brought fruit and meals for the family members incarcerating in the jail.

The case came to light after the 2016 Panama Papers revealed that the apartments were bought through offshore companies.

“I know that. I will be directly taken to jail”, Sharif, who was ousted for corruption by the Supreme Court previous year and later also banned from politics for life, said in a video released by his party earlier Friday.
