Pakistan police say Bradford woman was raped before murder
Hundreds of women are murdered by relatives across Pakistan each year on the pretext of defending what is seen as family honor.
Samia Shahid, a dual national, died in July during a visit to her family village in Punjab province.
A British woman who died in Pakistan in a so-called honour killing was allegedly murdered by her father and first husband, according to the police there who are investigating the killing.
Shahid’s ex-husband Ahmed confessed to police that he strangled Shahid to death with her own dupatta.
Police told the BBC that they intend to prosecute Ms Shahid’s father, Chaudhry Muhammad Shahid and first husband, Chaudhry Muhammad Shakeel, for her murder. Her death was assumed to be of natural causes and the 28-year-old was buried in a local cemetery.
The three-member investigation team constituted by Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif to investigate the murder of Samia Shahid has completed its findings and will hand over a report to the local police. However, Shahid’s second husband Syed Mukhtar Kazim claimed his wife had become the victim of an honour killing for marrying him in 2014 against her family’s wishes, after divorcing her former husband Shakeel.
Both have been remanded until 5 September.
Mr Kazam said his wife moved to live with him in Dubai past year but had made trips to the United Kingdom to talk to her parents about the relationship. “Killing a daughter is not the solution”. Ms Ghazanfar said a police chief has been suspended for mishandling the case and allowing Ms Shahid’s mother and sister to leave the country.
“People should learn a lesson, what crime did she do?”
A police official said that following the official procedure, a case was registered against Abbas yesterday and he was arrested and locked up in Mangal police station.
