Ninety-eight Palestinians and 21 Israelis have been killed. The site is of religious significance to both Muslims and Jews. The others died in clashes with Israeli forces. Israeli security forces have killed at least 80 Palestinians, the majority of whom were shot dead while allegedly attacking Israelis.
It also referred to the inhumane blockade measures imposed by Israel since 2006 on the Gaza Strip, where the population is suffering from poverty, displacement and destruction on a daily basis. Kerry met with both Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas on Tuesday in Jerusalem and Ramallah.
He died of wounds suffered in a clash with Israeli troops in the West Bank city of Ramallah two weeks ago, the Palestinian health ministry said.
Mr. Kerry condemned the violent attacks by Palestinians against Israelis and said Israel has “every right in the world to defend itself”.
The U.N.’s disproportionate assault against the Jewish state undermines the institutional credibility of what is supposed to be an impartial global body, and exposes the sores of politicization and selectivity that eat away at its founding mission, eroding the U.N. “Netanyahu has not only refused to talk about halting illegal settlement construction, but – on the contrary – recently announced plans to build 3,150 new settlements units in the West Bank and East Jerusalem while reiterating his rejection of a two-state solution”, Erekat said.
Israel says the violence stems from Palestinian incitement and incendiary videos on social media.
Erekat, however, said the Palestinians had been fully aware of Netanyahu’s hardline position long before Kerry’s latest visit to the region. Presidents George W. Bush and Bill Clinton took unsuccessful stabs at a two-state solution during their final months in office.
Further recommendations by the IDF include releasing prisoners, including some held in administrative detention, and allowing goods being exported from the Palestinian Authority to Israel to go through direct security checks instead of the existing system whereby they are transported via checkpoints.
Abbas, for his part, has provided no indication that he wants to restart direct peace talks with the Israelis anytime soon.
