Palestinian killed trying to stab officers in Hebron
Israeli police claimed that the youth, who was not immediately identified but said to be in his early 20s, had pulled a knife and stabbed two police officers, one of them a female officer, before another policeman at the scene shot and seriously injured him. A third Palestinian was shot and wounded after stabbing two officers in Jerusalem.
Another attacker was detained after attempting to stab a soldier in Hebron, according to the Israeli army.
The death raised to five the number of alleged attackers – four Palestinians and a Jordanian – killed since Friday in incidents in which Israeli authorities said at least nine Israelis have been wounded.
The officers attacked in Hebron were securing a holy site known to Jews as the Tomb of the Patriarchs and to Muslims…
In the latest violence, two Palestinians who tried to stab Israeli paramilitary border policemen in the town of Hebron, a flashpoint in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, were shot by the force, Israeli police said. The second officer, a man, shot and wounded the assailant.
Palestinians have accused Israel of using excessive force and say that some of those killed posed no threat or had no intention of attacking anyone.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned that the potential for violence could rise as the Jewish high holidays approach.
The wave of violence since last October has killed 227 Palestinians, 34 Israelis, two Americans, one Jordanian, one Eritrean and a Sudanese, according to an AFP count.
Hanan Ashrawi, a senior Palestinian official, condemned what she called Israel’s “extra-judicial killings” of the attackers but did not condemn the attacks themselves. The Palestinians say it is rooted in almost 50 years of military occupation and dwindling hopes for independence from Israeli rule.
The Palestinians, as well as Israeli and worldwide rights groups, say Israel has at times used excessive force to subdue attackers. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas is visiting NY this week as well, where he is scheduled to meet with U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry and to address the General Assembly.
