Palestinian kills British tourist in Jerusalem
Mark Regev, Israel’s ambassador to the United Kingdom, said: “My thoughts are with the family and friends of United Kingdom student Hannah Bladon, who was murdered in a senseless act of terror in Jerusalem today”.
She was fatally wounded in the attack.
Israeli forces shut down all entrances leading to Jerusalem’s old town in the aftermath of the fatal knife stabbing attack.
Her name has yet to be released.
The British embassy told the Guardian that it was in touch with local authorities following the incident, but didn’t comment beyond that. Tamimi was reportedly “convicted in 2011 for sexually assaulting his daughter”.
Tamimi suffers from “personal, mental, or moral hardship”, according to the Israel Security Agency (ISA).
“We received a report that someone had been seriously injured in a stabbing attack on the light railway”.
According to CityPass, the light rail resumed service to most stations, with the exception of stations between the Central Bus Station and Damascus Gate. “We are saddened by the continued violence aimed at creating ill will between peoples in the holy city”, Eli Beer, United Hatzalah president and founder, stated.
Update 4.55pm: A 57 year-old Palestinian man has been arrested after a British woman was fatally stabbed in Jerusalem.
Off-duty police officers and civilians were quick to react and wrestled the terrorist to the ground.
Israeli police earlier said she was 25.
Police had been on high alert for Passover when tens of thousands of Jews pray at the Western Wall inside the Old City and some visit the flashpoint Temple Mount compound above it.
Although it has been a relatively quiet period over the last few months, Palestinians from the West Bank were prevented from entering Israel during Passover as part of the security operation. They were taken to an interrogation and detention center in Jerusalem’s Old City district. “Regretfully, terrorism struck today in Israel’s capital – Jerusalem”, said Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in a statement.
