Palestinian Woman Tries to Stab Israeli, is Shot Dead
Two Palestinians, including a teen, attacked Israelis with knives and a auto in the occupied West Bank Sunday and were killed when civilians and security forces intervened, the latest in a almost two-month wave of violence. He said despite attempts by medics to save her, she succumbed to her wounds.
The victim, who laid unconscious with stab wounds to her upper body, died after being rushed to Shaare Zedek Medical Center in Jerusalem.
A Jewish settler in the area, Gershon Mesika, told army radio he hit the assailant with his auto before a soldier shot her. The attacker, identified as a resident of a Palestinian village near Ramallah, was shot and killed by a civilian at the scene, according to the IDF.
Shortly afterwards, Israeli police said that a mob of Israeli civilians violently beat and bound the hands of a Palestinian Bedouin man they incorrectly believed was the attacker. After crashing his auto, he came out with a knife and tried to stab people but was shot dead by a bystander before he could harm anyone. Israeli politicians have encouraged licensed gun owners to carry their weapons during the wave of unrest.
He said “citizens must be on maximum alert”.
“I must say that we are showing such awareness, with considerable resourcefulness and courage, and this is deserving of all praise”.
“This is not terrorism by organisations”, he said at the start of a cabinet meeting.
No Israelis were reported seriously wounded in the separate attacks, which occurred after the violence had shown signs of subsiding last week before a new series of assaults began Thursday.
The next morning, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced more stringent security measures being taken in the Hebron area, where most of the recent terror attacks have originated.
In the Etzion bloc of Jewish settlements, a Palestinian stabbed and killed a 20-year-old Israeli woman, an Israeli police spokesman said.
At least 700 Palestinian children between the ages of 11 and 17 have been arrested by the Israeli army this year, with more than half still languishing in Israeli prisons, many of them held without trial.
The alleged attacker was shot dead, Israeli police said on Monday afternoon.
The wave of violence began over tensions surrounding a sensitive Jerusalem holy site and has since spread across Israel, the West Bank and the Gaza border.
Israel says the violence stems from Palestinian incitement and incendiary videos on social media.
