Pampling shoots course-record at Aus Open
During the course of the final day it was announced that the 2016 version of the Australian Open will be held at nearby Royal Sydney.
He dropped three strokes in the opening two holes at the Australian Golf Club, but countered with two birdies on the front nine, before undoing his hard work with a triple-bogey on the ninth.
“I’ll have to have them yell during Jordan’s backswing or something”, Jones said. “I watched (Greg) Norman win it and (Adam) Scott win in it. I’ve been close before and tomorrow I’m going to do all I can to put my name on the trophy alongside (Jack) Nicklaus and Norman and those guys”.
The 22-year-old American’s eagle-birdie finish to the third round ensured he would go head-to-head with Jones in the final group to tee off at the Australian Golf Club on Sunday.
Jones secured a three-shot lead over the world No. 1 and defending champion after the third round of the Australian Open in Sydney, courtesy of a superb 3-under par 68, which was helped by birdies on the final two holes.
Meanwhile, Jones started the final round of the Australian Open with a three stroke lead over Jordan Spieth, but anything can happen in the sport of golf and it made for an interesting Sunday. Scott made another sloppy bogey on the sixth, his 16th hole of the day, and he needs a big charge today to remain in the hunt for the Stonehaven Cup.
“It’s frustrating to only shoot even par when I feel like my game was certainly ready to shoot a three, four, five under round”. I can’t wait to get over there for The Open.
“The hitting was fantastic and it just gave me the opportunity to make the putts”, said the 46-year- old, twice a victor on the US PGA Tour.
He joined the explosion by making up nine shots to edge past Pampling by a shot with a 65 that included seven birdies and a sole bogey.
His runner-up finish last year at the Australian Open earned him a trip to this year’s Open Championship at St. Andrews, where he missed the cut.
Meanwhile, Northern Ireland’s Darren Clarke is nine shots off the pace on a a card of 70.

“I struck it nicely, there’s not too much room to land it, up there”, Spieth said. “I could have let it slip and let it get away easily, but I fought it out”.
“I can’t recall off the top of my head, normally I can sneak one in”, said Scott, managing a smile.
