Pan Pan: Oldest Known Male Giant Panda Marks 30th Birthday in China
Turning 30 is a big deal in the human world, but in the animal world it can be unheard-of, especially when the birthday boy is a panda.
Pan Pan, whose age is roughly equivalent to that of a 100-year-old human, was given a birthday cake – a three-tiered ice sculpture decorated with carrots.
Pan Pan the giant panda rung in his 30th birthday Monday afternoon in serious style… with a super fun frozen cake topped with delicious carrots. Pan Pan, however, has successfully fathered more than a hundred cubs in the span of two decades.
The panda, who was born in the wild and brought up at the research center, was also visited by fans from around the world and all of them serenaded him with a happy birthday, the Daily Mail United Kingdom reported.
“Pan Pan is in good health but with saggy skin and loose muscles”.
Giant pandas are one of the world’s most endangered species. The senior panda holds the title for oldest-ever giant panda in captivity.
“While still very low, this represents a real success story, with numbers increasing from around 1,000 in the late 1970s”, said the World Wildlife Fund, which was invited by the Chinese government to help conserve the giant panda population in the 1970s.
Pan Pan will spend his remaining years in the comfort of the center.
Meanwhile, the oldest female giant panda, Basi will celebrate her 35 birthday in two months time.
