Panthers CB Norman fined $26044 by NFL
Although losing at the last second has become par for the course with the Giants, the surprising thing was watching Pro Bowl wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. meltdown in real time in a fierce matchup with Josh Norman, the best corner in the game this season.
But lost in all of this are a few other key details about what may have led to Beckham’s unhinged day. In a statement, NFL Vice President of Football Operations Merton Hanks noted that Beckham’s actions “placed his opponents at unnecessary risk of injury and should have been avoided”.
Beckham’s appeal was heard on Wednesday afternoon in New York City amid much discussion about what the Panthers did to set Beckham off during the game.
Norman was docked the larger amount for striking Beckham in the head and neck area.
But once again, a player put himself before team and it helped the Giants lose another hard game.
After the verdict was handed down, Bekcham released a statement apologizing to his teammates, the Giants organization, and to the fans of the National Football League, saying he “dropped the ball on sportsmanship on Sunday”.
The coach said the baseball bat is used by the Panthers as a motivational prop, representing the team having a home run mentality when it comes to making big plays. While he reached out to his teammates and coaches for putting the Giants in this predicament, it is notable Beckham doesn’t mention Josh Norman or the Panthers in the apology. I guess the guy got under his skin.
In a conversation with Hall Of Fame NFL star Michael Irvin, Beckham said that he has been taunted all season long by opposing players. Neither man has had any problem using the exhausted “questioning of manhood” strategy of insulting Beckham.
As for Coughlin’s comments that the Panthers had agitated Beckham, Rivera said he has a lot of respect for the Giants’ longtime coach. He was provoked. He was out of control, he was wrong, there’s no doubt about that.
“I have never seen a more malicious play in my 42 years around the NFL”, NFL analyst Ron Jaworski said. I displayed poor sportsmanship. Coughlin does not believe this situation accurately reflects Beckham’s character. Beckham was reacting to his own flubbed reception and couldn’t handle the smack talk he was getting from Norman afterward.
Tom Coughlin always prefers to look ahead, but today he opened his start-of-the-work-week news conference not with a rundown of the Minnesota Vikings, but with some thoughts on the ongoing Odell Beckham Jr. controversy. “I don’t know. He had a baseball bat”.
