Panthers QB Newton plays footbrawl with DB
“I think we’re making a big deal out of nothing”. I knew it was going to be a little bit of uproar from it but not this much, man. This is just taking on a whole other form.
“People are going to have their concerns with me riding on the Segway – ‘Hey, what is he doing? I’m here for those guys in (the locker room)”. Carolina Panthers’ QB Cam Newton and the offensive players had took the field and practice different plays that they are working on.
A defensive lineman is dominated during a drill; a running back or receiver is tackled unexpectedly to the ground; a defensive player gets a hit on a quarterback.
ESPN’s Louis Riddick says Newton’s choice to fight “doesn’t present management”, and the Observer’s Scott Fowler writes that Newton is “lucky that exclusively your fame obtained harm”. “I have no regrets of things that I’ve done”. Its been whispered about ‘franchise quarterback doing this or doing that.
Fights are common during training camps, but rarely involve franchise quarterbacks.
“I’m not going to let anyone dictate how I play”.
“However this was one other check: How are you going to answer?” I take a family approach. Still, the idea of a quarterback’s red jersey is that they should never be taking or creating contact during practice. He said reporters only see their exchanges on the field.
McDermott then admitted that he even encouraged Newton to keep pushing and challenging Norman. “I’m not a big fan of it, but I know at the end of the day that the guys will come back together and be the team that we are”, Rivera said.
But Newton said he do it over again. He could stumble over a stick and trip up, Newton said.
Bill Voth of Black and Blue Review has agreed with Newton’s assessment, picking out Ginn’s highlights as top plays on multiple days, including a dramatic leap over a plastic fence. “They (the crowd) brought a lot of energy to practice”, Panthers coach Ron Rivera said. “He’s willing to fight”, Rivera said about Newton, according to Panthers.com.
The 6-foot-5, 245-pound Newton called Monday “another step toward greatness”. “I thought my knee would hold up, but I wasn’t sure”.
Tight end Greg Olsen agreed that the incident was blown out of proportion.
They were quickly separated, but tension between the two had been building throughout training camp.
