Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin Done for the Season After ACL Injury
In his second season, Benjamin was set to improve upon his rookie campaign where he broke Panthers records in receptions (73), yards (1,008) and a touchdowns (9).
Benjamin was the 28th overall pick by Carolina in the 2014 National Football League (NFL) Draft and became a major part of their offense last season.
The injury occurred during the first day of scrimmages Wednesday with the Miami Dolphins at Wofford College. He’s worked tremendously hard to put himself in a position to have a strong year.
Kevlin Benjamin injured his knee at Panthers training camp practice on Wednesday. Ginn said losing the team’s No. 1 receiver is devastating, but he expected the group to be ready to step up.
“It’s one of those things it could have happened in any drill”, Panthers coach Ron Rivera said.
Only one players fantasy outlook has sky-rocketed more than Funchess, and that would be tight end Greg Olsen.
Only one short skirmish happened Wednesday with Carolina offensive tackle Michael Oher briefly scrapping with Miami’s Olivier Vernon.
Make no bones about it, this is a big blow to Carolina’s cause, a punch to the gut that naturally takes some air out of the optimism surrounding the season.
Benjamin was taken to Charlotte, North Carolina, for an MRI, which confirmed the tear. “If Coach Philbin said anything to our guys it was as if I were talking”. For the Dolphins they lost safety Louis Delmas for the year with a torn ACL. “Reshad (Jones) is going to be talking to both of us and we just want to help this team win”.
Jackson Haskins is an NFL writer for page2sports.com, you can follow him on Twitter @JacksonHaskins1. By the time the cart came onto the field, Benjamin was surrounded by Newton, receiver Ted Ginn Jr., head athletic trainer Ryan Vermillion and Rivera.
Of course, this is all purely speculation right now, but former Colts receiver Reggie Wayne makes a ton of sense for the Panthers right now. The only thing that can be considered “good” about injuries is the fact that unproven players get a chance to prove themselves. We didn’t come here to be disruptive and fight. I had already thought that Brown was going to be the starter opposite Benjamin, because he was the flawless complement to him, so now it should be nearly guaranteed that he will start.
“They’re a good defense, they play fast and challenge us offensively”, Tannehill said.
