Panthers WR/PR Ted Ginn Jr. comes up big vs. former team
The Carolina Panthers and Denver Broncos will meet in Super Bowl 50 after scoring contrasting wins over the Arizona Cardinals and New England Patriots respectively.
The Panthers responded with Newton’s 5-yard touchdown toss to wide receiver Devin Funchess – followed by a two-point conversion pass – at the 5:26 mark.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) Ted Ginn Jr. got the last laugh against the Arizona Cardinals. He’s leaving behind his camera.
Next stop: Santa Clara, California, for the Super Bowl.
The good news: Carolina Panthers are going to the Super Bowl for the second time in franchise history. “Our pen has a lot more ink left”.
That would be against Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos in two weeks. “We went out and we put work in. I’m excited and ready to go, man. We still have one more thing to do”. Carolina is favored by four points.
“Staring over at that sideline, seeing that feeling the other team has, is going to stick with me probably the rest of my life”, Palmer said.
That game ended with the Tom Brady leading New England to a field goal in the final seconds for a 32-29 win over the Panthers in Houston. The Panthers forced seven turnovers, including four interceptions of Carson Palmer.
Carolina scored the first three times they touched the ball in seizing a 17-0 lead and led 24-7 at halftime, taking advantage of four turnovers by a shaky Arizona attack.
Carolina Panthers’ star quarterback Cam Newton didn’t excel a strong performance as compared to his plays in the regular season.
After a scoreless first quarter, the Cardinals got on the scoreboard with a 1-yard rush by David Johnson. He was also sacked three times and lost two fumbles.
“When you’re in a dogfight, every play counts”, Ginn said. “My team knew it was personal…” He completed 27-of-56 attempted passes for 310 yards with two interceptions.
“We continued to fight and it was just too much to overcome”. “There was pressure all day”. The previous time a team scored as many as 49 in a conference title game was 1990, when Buffalo beat the Los Angeles Raiders 51-3 in the AFC…. Most folks figure his fourth Super Sunday will be the last time he dons a helmet.
“Look at what we showed today”. The Cardinals completed just 40 yards on the ground against Packers and the squad will be needing to find some facade of a running game against the Carolina Panthers. Ginn took the end-around handoff from Cam Newton and got around Cardinals cornerback Justin Bethel before darting back across the field.
No doubt the large deficit the team faced – Arizona was down 17-0 at the end of the first quarter – contributed to some of the struggles, but overall, it was a night to forget. Another botched tackle, this one at the Carolina 47 by Rashad Johnson, left Brown with nothing but unprotected turf.
Arizona finally moved into Carolina territory, only to see Kawann Short sack Palmer and strip the ball.
The Panthers did lose two defensive starters in the first half, safety Roman Harper (eye) and linebacker Thomas Davis (broken right forearm).
Patrick Peterson dropped a punt late in the second quarter, and Carolina pounced. Gano kicked a 21-yard field goal in the third.
The crowd immediately erupted into chants of “MVP! MVP!”
Meanwhile jubilant fans in Denver began their celebration as the side brings home another trophy for the cabinet of team owner Homer Simpson (assuming he held onto them after all these years).
Newton finished with 335 passing yards for the night on 19-of-28 completions with 2 touchdowns and an interception plus two rushing TDs.
