Paralympics day two: Jason Smyth emulates Bolt, controversy on the track
JASON Smyth said it was “an incredible feeling” after he stormed to victory in the T13 100m Final at the Paralympic Games in Rio de Janiero this afternoon.
Nambala took a deserved silver medal in an African record of 10.78 and will contest the 400m later in the Games while Australia’s Chad Perris also set an Area Record of 10.83 seconds in third place.
Once he got out of the blocks safely, it was a mere formality for Smyth as he raced through the gears, pulling clear of the rest of the field, to cross the line in a time of 10.64.
It’s his third gold medal in the event and his fifth Paralympic gold in his third games.
“This is my third Paralympic Games and my fifth gold medal”. We wish him the best of luck on September 9′.
“I knew with the heats the guys were going to step up and I needed to stay up and I knew I was capable of it, looking back I don’t think I started particularly well”.
He takes part in the T13 heats and will be hopeful that he can qualify for the final on Friday.
Ireland’s women’s Tandem B pairing of Katie-George Dunleavy and Eve McCrystal finished seventh in the final of the 1000 metres track time trial in a person best time of 1:12.332.
A comfortable heat victory last night suggested there was more to come from the 29-year-old and boy, did he deliver.
