Paramount, Hasbro Creating Movie Universe Around G.I. Joe, Four Other Brands
And now Paramount is throwing their hat in the ring, with an ambitious plan to bring five Hasbro properties together, because why the hell not? “We’re excited to grow our agreement and make even more movies based upon these popular and powerful Hasbro characters and their worlds”. “Joe franchises”, Brad Grey, Paramount chairman and CEO, told THR in announcing the deal.
A follow-up to G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra and G.I. Micronauts, Rom: Spaceknight, MASK, and Visionaries are slated to tie into existing film franchise GI Joe, and a writer’s room is being assembled in the vein of the one created for the Transformers Cinematic Universe.
Paramount and Hasbro are now assembling a writers room for the new movies, which will be produced by Hasbro’s film studio Allspark Pictures.
M.A.S.K. had a premise similiar to G.I.
In fact, during an interview, Goldner stated, “Hasbro and Allspark Pictures put storytelling at the center of everything we do”. “Extending our partnership with Paramount allows us to continue our long-term strategy and overall vision to build dynamic worlds for all of our brands, and we are thrilled to collaborate with them as we develop these properties”. Paramount, therefore, is taking advantage of this franchise filmmaking scheme into creating more movies for the toy lines.
Regardless, the G.I. Joe franchise could do with being shaken up a little, especially if the studio hopes to turn that into the box office force that the Transformers movies have become.
ROM is best known due to its Marvel comic series, but it began as a robotic toy kit from Parker Brothers which is now a Hasbro-owned company; the comic was about a robotic knight who defends the planet of Galador from invading Dire Wraiths.
There’s no current timeline on when we’ll see the first project to come out of this cinematic universe.
