Paramount, Skydance Want Christopher McQuarrie Back for ‘Mission: Impossible 6′
Oscar victor Christopher McQuarrie is in negotiations to return to write and direct “Mission: Impossible 6” for Paramount and Skydance, an individual familiar with the situation has told TheWrap.
Ghost Protocol invigorated the Mission: Impossible franchise in 2011, giving the saga a much-needed shot of adrenaline that continued into this year with Rogue Nation. That’s a swift move considering the four years between the last two. Hunt has gone rogue to counter the Syndicate, a rival organisation to the International Monetary Fund, whilst back at home his colleagues face redeployment when the International Monetary Fund is disbanded following a government investigation. Already an Oscar-winning writer thanks to his script for the 1995 thriller The Usual Suspects, McQuarrie has a long history with Cruise that includes penning the scripts for the 2008 World War II thriller Valkyrie and the recent, criminally under-appreciated sci-fi film Edge of Tomorrow, both of which starred Cruise.
Simon Pegg will likely be back for another film with Renner, popular Ving Rhames and the new International Monetary Fund overseer, Alec Baldwin. Together, along with femme fatale Ilsa Faust (Rebecca Ferguson) they work to bring down the Syndicate.
One of the factors that’s given the Mission: Impossible series of movies a few distinction is that each film so far has had a different director. According to the report by Variety sources close to the film state that McQuarrie is close to making a deal.
McQuarrie directed this summer’s “Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation” and previously worked with star Tom Cruise on “Jack Reacher”, though Ed Zwick is now directing the sequel to that film. 2016 and it’s aiming for a 2017 release date.
