Parents forced teen to live in woods for eating Pop-Tart
Both Driggers were charged with a single count each of unlawful neglect of a child.
The girl was discovered by authorities two days into her “sentence”.
The girl was instructed to pitch a tent in the woods and was given a whistle, flashlight, toilet paper and a watch. The South Carolina parents reportedly set up a tent for their daughter in an area where wild boar are known to frequent. Such is the case with James Driggers and his wife, Crystal, who apparently thought sending their teenage daughter to live in the woods was a suitable punishment. Deputies say the parents told the girl she had to meet someone at a fence at specific times to get any food.
Thankfully, the teen’s grandmother was able to take her granddaughter in and report the situation to the police.
When officers arrived the parents apparently promised that their daughter would be allowed back into the house. She was outside during Thursday night’s severe storms in the region.
The reason behind doing this, according to a release from the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office, is the parents wanted to punish their daughter for eating a Pop-Tart toaster pastry.
Investigators also learned that during the previous month, the child had been sent from the home every day at 8 a.m. and prohibited to return until 6 p.m. The 14-year-old has since been transferred to the South Carolina Department of Social Services, while her five siblings have been placed in the custody of their grandmother. “From trying to correct a child’s behavior to true criminal punishment”. Four other children are in the custody of their grandparents.
