Parents in Plover face fine if their children bully other students
If a child is found bullying others a couple of times, the parents could face a $124.00 dollar fine.
“I certainly can’t imagine you don’t get good results when including parents and guardians in what’s going on with their children”, said Jeanne Koepke, the principal of McDill Elementary School in Portage County.
Surveys show up to 20 percent of students have experienced bullying on school property, and another 15 percent have been bullied online.
The ordinance was drafted by Police Chief Dan Ault, as an effort to get parents to reach out and teach their children about bullying, and the consequences.
“It’s not the school’s responsibility to raise the kids”. He says that so far no citations have been issued since the ordinance went into effect. “It’s not the police’s job to raise your kids”, Ault told WAOW-TV.
The Plover Village Board this month approved an anti-bullying ordinance. The first offense is a warning, after which, police will provide guidance on how to curb the negative behavior.
We asked people on social media what they thought of the ordinance, and people have taken a strong stance on both sides of the issue. He says the new ordinance could help hold parents who don’t do enough to stop their kids from bullying accountable.
