Paris Attacks: Eiffel Tower, Louvre, Disneyland Paris shut down
In the wake of the terrorist attacks Friday night that left more that 120 dead, top Parisian landmarks are closing their doors as an act of mourning – a few indefinitely.
“To show a few empathy, it’s appropriate to turn off the lights”, said Malu Sison, a 45-year-old nurse on holiday from Las Vegas who had long dreamed of going up the Eiffel Tower and comparing it with the smaller version in her home town.
Peace for Paris is a simple painting produced in a few strokes, combining the Eiffel Tower with the symbol of peace that started life as the logo for Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND).
When asked about how he landed on this concept, Jullien replied, “This was the first thing-when I put my brush on paper, this was the first thing that came…” It was the same message Jullien tried to share with his Eiffel Tower illustration. People are also posting the image in conjunction with hashtags, #peaceforParis and #prayforParis. Instagram’s own post of the image has topped 1.3 million likes.
The angry protesters who belong to the Front National joined a solidarity march of peaceful demonstrators in Paris who carried banners declaring “We are not afraid”, “Pray for Paris” and “Je suis Paris” in homage to the terrorist attacks on Charlie Hebdo in January.
In the aftermath of the Paris attacks Friday, airports in France remained open, though a few airlines reported canceled flights.
Of its reach, Jullien says he thinks the social role of graphics is a powerful.
“I was overwhelmed that so many people used it”, he said in an email to The Associated Press.
“I’m sort of nearly embarrassed to be getting that much exposure as a result of such a tragic event”, Jullien told Wired. Kevin Breen, of the United Church of Bacon and Sunday Assembly, said organizers wanted to provide a venue where everyone, regardless of their religious beliefs, could gather to reflect and “show their love for the world and humanity”.
Although large gatherings of people have been discouraged in the city amid fears of further attacks, many have been leaving flowers and candles at the scenes of the violence.
“It’s this sort of moment where you don’t necessarily try to understand everything coherently”.
