Paris attacks: Malcolm Turnbull condemns ‘brutal terrorist attacks’, pledges
Nikolic is concerned by suggestions that the Paris terrorists may have hidden as humanitarian arrivals and he’s been backed by former Prime Minister Tony Abbott, who in Monday said, “The Minister for Border Protection is, in my judgment, a significant part of our national security machinery”.
“Turnbull praised France’s resilience and pledged solidarity with its people”.
No terror group has yet claimed responsibility for the bloody massacres where victims were picked at random at venues popular with young French people. “That won’t change unless Islamic State pulls off a Paris-style attack in a USA city”.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with them at this bad time”, Turnbull said in a statement from Berlin. “We are in a common cause and we have a single common goal, to defend our values and our way of life – and to defeat these terrorists and their assault upon us”, he said. Attacks in this environment are likely to happen in the future, but Australians can be assured that we have the best security agencies, they are monitoring the situation and seeking to protect Australians at home and so far as we can, abroad.
“We are working very closely with security agencies in other countries, of course, particularly now with the security agencies in France”.
Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop said unfolding events over the past week had ensured counter-terrorism would be at the top of the agenda.
Ms Bishop earlier labelled the attacks “a black Friday for France and for the world”.
“We’re looking at every possible scenario to make sure that we’re doing all we can to stay ahead of this problem and protecting people from the constant threat of ISIL”, he said.
There are 2500 Australians registered as being in France but authorities believe the actual number is much higher.
It is not clear why Russian Federation objected to Australia’s presence, especially given the position put by Bishop – that discussions on a peace path should be on the basis that all options should be open – was similar to Russia’s.
“We understand that these six separate terrorist attacks commenced at about 9.30pm Friday, 13th of November, in the heart of Paris”, she said.
Other political leaders have also condemned the attacks, including Opposition Leader Bill Shorten.
“The world will not give in to fear”, he wrote on Twitter.
The French Ambassador to Australia Christophe Lecourtier has indicated there is more to come, saying France will continue to show strength.
Turnbull has met the Indonesian president, the German chancellor, the European Union leadership, the Japanese prime minister, the Indian prime minister and the prime minister of Singapore over the past three days.
