Paris attacks: Who was Hasna Aitboulahcen?
During Wednesday’s dawn raid in the Paris suburb of Saint Denis, the 26-year-old was heard responding to a member of the team hunting for her cousin Abdelhamid Abaaoud, the alleged brains behind the attacks.
Hasna Aitboulahcen, the woman believed to have blown herself up during the police raid that killed the suspected ringleader of the Paris attacks, swopped a party-girl persona for that of an Islamist radical just months before her death.
“Where’s your friend, where is he?” the officer is heard shouting on a clip filmed by local residents.
Our pictures show an “extrovert” drug trafficker with a violent childhood who drank alcohol and earned her nickname because of her love of big cowboy hats.
As we spoke to the women, crowds of teenagers and young men, clearly with little to do, hung around.
Explaining her daughter’s conversion to ISIS, her mother said from home, near Paris: “It’s a brainwashing”.
According to the Daily Telegraph, a former acquaintance in the town of Creutzwald, near Metz, where she frequently visited her father, told the Républicain Lorrain newspaper: “She was an extravert, a bit lost”.
The 28-year-old Belgian extremist was shot dead by a police sniper. “She was always smiling and very polite”.
“On Sunday at 7pm she called me because I had called her – and she sounded like she had given up on life”.
Sky News reported that a French official said one of the officers had yelled to Aitboulahcen: “Where is your boyfriend?”. “She had lot of boyfriends, but nothing serious”. “I have never even seen her open a Quran”.
The explosive vest she triggered killed a police dog named Diesel and ripped her to shreds, sending her head and spine hurtling out a window.
“I don’t think she had the intention to be a suicide bomber”, she says.
Abaaoud, who had mounted several failed terror plots prior to the coordinated strikes that killed 129 people last week, also died during the seven hours of fighting, during which cops fired 5,000 bullets.
However she never left, and at some point returned to live with her birth mother in Aulnay-sous-Bois until a few weeks ago.
She said: ‘If I’d have known that she would have ended up doing something like this I would have tried to bend her ear more – told her she was being stupid’.
