Park becomes Hall of Fame eligible, shoots 72 in Women’s PGA
The 23-year-old Otaegui birdied four of the last five holes at Diamond Country Club.
Buoyed by the early ace and birdies on her final two holes, Henderson took the early lead Thursday in the Women’s PGA Championship, the second of the LPGA Tour’s five major championships. “I really felt I could do it. I really thought I could play well this week and I thought I was really ready but I just wasn’t”. “Maybe it runs in my favor a little bit”. But she began to struggle with her driver, hitting the ball left off the tee on three straight holes to start her back nine and dropped two shots. She’s winless since the 2014 U.S. Women’s Open and hasn’t had a top-10 finish in 36 events.
When Lydia Ko won the last two major championships, she was the one lurking behind. Ko was in a group with Gerina Piller (69) and Brittany Lincicome (70), with only five players under par after two rounds. “But when I’m out there I’m not thinking so much about records and what could happen”.
The real victor early in the second round was the towering trees of Sahalee.
Lee bogeyed her 17th hole, though, while Henderson drained a 20-footer on No. 15 to save par and then nailed an 18-footer at No. 17 to regain the lead.
DUBLIN (AP) – Bailey Tardy and Monica Vaughn teamed to win two matches to help the United States tie Britain and Ireland 3-3 after the first day of the Curtis Cup amateur matches. The course is playing almost 4 1/2 shots over par.
“It has some teeth”, Piller said.
“I think my performance was 80 points (out of 100)”. Christina Kim was at 2 over after three holes before rallying on her second nine. It was just the seventh birdie on the long, uphill par 4.
“It was a pretty good day today”, Henderson said. She finished at 7 over along with Stacy Lewis (76), both barely making the cut and staying around for the weekend.
Three-time defending champion Inbee Park was in the featured group in the afternoon. A day after wrapping up an LPGA Hall of Fame spot, the South Korean star shot an 79 on Friday to drop to 9 over. “I definitely feel that my game is good enough and it’s just a matter of time when the pieces fit and it just comes together”.
“I thought that I could play really well this week and I thought that I was ready, but I just wasn’t”, Park said.
Park has been dealing with inflammation in the tendon and ligaments of her left thumb, but overcame the discomfort to be on the leaderboard for most of the first round before making the bogey on the final hole.
The 46-year-old shot a level-par 71 for a one-over total that leaves her tied for 10th place at the second women’s major of the year in Seattle.
Park said she will reconsider taking an extended break to let the thumb heal, one that could bring the Olympics into question. “I might need some time to really get better and be back with the confidence”. Ariya Jutanugarn has won three straight tournaments, but shot a 75 on Friday.
Michelle Wie shot a 78, making a double bogey and five bogeys. If you would like to discuss another topic, look for a relevant article. We know it’s tough.
